The induction heater works in the same way as a transformer. The primary coil is the heater and the secondary coil is the workpiece. When the heater is switched on, a high voltage, low alternating current passes through the numerous windings of the primary coil. This induces a low voltage, high current in the workpiece acting as the secondary coil. This high current results in the heating up of the workpiece. Heat flows through the inner ring, causing a thermal expansion which allows a part to be fitted (or removed) without damage. When it cools down it shrinks onto the part.

Yes, Induction heaters are used for assembly (Low Frequency) and/or disassembly (Mid Frequency) of bearings, gears, sprockets and other machine components. 

The BETEX MF Quick-Heater (Mid-Frequency) consists of a generator with a fixed or flexible inductor. The compact dimensions make it easy to move. MF Quick-Heaters save time because they can be used quickly (fewer actions) and heat faster than conventional methods. The energy consumption is much more efficient because less power is used. One of the major advantages of this type of induction heater is that they are not limited to cylindrical shaped components: flexible inductors can be wrapped around large or odd sized components.

Bearing manufacturers advise: 

Bearings generally should only be heated up to a maximum temperature of 120ºC (248ºF).

It is common knowledge that a correct mounting method extends the bearing life. Controlled stress-free heating prevents unnecessary damage, while retaining the

original bearing lubrication. Ideal for sealed bearings (2RS-ZZ). Bearing manufacturers recommend controlled induction heating as the best practice for bearing mounting.
